Citroen updates C5 Aircross Hybrid SUV to remind owners to plug in regularly

French automobile manufacturer Citroen has announced that its C5 Aircross plug-in hybrid SUV has received an over-the-air (OTA) update that has enabled the e-SUV to remind to plug in when the battery goes down. Rolled out in the United Kingdom with the intention to help further optimize the petrol-electric powertrain’s efficiency, the updated e-SUV will now notify the owner he/she fails to plug in the EV regularly. The “plug-in reminders” will be displayed on the infotainment system touchscreen in the vehicle’s cabin.

These so-called plug-in reminders or messages will flash up in the infotainment system touchscreen if the vehicles are not charged for five consecutive days, or ten rides are conducted without charging the battery pack. In the first instance, the vehicle will flash one plug-in reminder daily, but the number of notifications will be increased to two per day after a month.

Claimed to be a byword for innovation with the intention to add even greater value to the ownership, the French car brand said that the plug-in reminders would allow owners to further optimize the efficiency of their e-SUVs.

Announcing the update, the statement reads, “The notifications, which come in the form of messages on the touchscreen, have been designed to ensure that drivers can take full advantage of the efficiency benefits of their PHEVs – coupled with obvious environmental benefits.”

The update is expected to help EV owners in making the best of the vehicle’s 34-mile official electric driving range. The manufacturer already claims that its data shows 55 per cent of journeys shorter than 25 miles are made using the electric powertrain of the vehicle. But, the company believes that an increase in frequency of charging would increase the proportion of electric-only trips, which would go a long way in reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Charging the e-SUV’s battery pack takes less than two hours when it is plugged into a 7.4-kW ‘wallbox’ home charger.

It is also worth-mentioning here that the update will only apply to the Citroen C5 Aircross Hybrid, which has a plug-in hybrid powertrain as it comes equipped with an electric motor and a 178 bhp petrol-powered engine.

Effective immediately, the OTA software update has been sent to the e-SUVs straight from the Citroen HQ. It means that owners of the Citroen C5 Aircross plug-in hybrid SUV don’t have to take their vehicles to a dealer to get its software updated.
