Bigger battery-equipped MG5 EV delivers longer 250-mile range
British automobile giant MG has announced the launch of a new variant of the MG5 EV variant that comes equipped with a bigger battery pack to deliver a longer range between charges. According MG’s official statement, the new MG5 EV Long Range version comes equipped with a 61.1-kWh lithium-ion battery pack that delivers an additional 36 miles (roughly 58 kilometers) of range on the combined cycle.
MG is now owned by state-owned Chinese automobile manufacturer SAIC Motor Corporation Limited. On the WLTP combined cycle, the new EV offers a longer range of 250 miles (402 kilometers). If the EV is used solely for urban driving, the range increases further to a total of around 334 miles (537 km) as per the WLTP City cycle.
In a press release, the automaker also claimed that the new MG5 EV Long Range version offers highest range per £ of MSRP of any EV currently available in the United Kingdom.
The longer range is obviously delivered by bigger battery pack in the new version of the vehicle. The standard version of the MG5 EV comes equipped with a 52.5-kWh battery pack that delivers a range of around 214 miles on a single charge.
Charging the new EV’s bigger battery pack to 80 per cent storage of charge (SoC) consumes slightly more than an hour on a 50kW rapid charger, while using a 100kW rapid charger takes just 40 minutes to fulfill the same task. Recharging the massive battery pack overnight to 100 per cent using a domestic home charger takes roughly 9.5 hours.
Many of the MG5 EV Long Range’s specs are similar to that of the base model. For instance, the new version’s front-mounted electric motor is the same as that of the base model, delivering 154 hp (115 kW) of power and 260 Nm (192 lb-ft) of torque. The 0-60 mph (96 km/h) acceleration time also stays the same at 7.3 seconds, just as the top speed stays at 115 mph (185 km/h).
In addition to the larger battery pack, the MG5 EV Long Range comes loaded with the MG Pilot Driver Assistance System – a suite of driver assist technologies that includes Active Emergency Braking, Intelligent High Beam Assist, Lane Keep Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Traffic Jam Assist.
The MG5 EV Long Range is available in two trim levels, viz. the Excite and the better-equipped Exclusive, priced at £26,495 and £28,995, respectively.
