Tesco to launch UK’s first drive-thru store

Supermarket chain Tesco has announced that it would expand its reach further with the launch of the UK’s first ever drive-thru store at Baldock in Hertfordshire this week.

The new service will allow customers to order their groceries online and pick up their weekly shop without leaving their cars.

The supermarket giant said that the new drive-thru store would target customers who want their goods picked and packed but who don’t have the time to wait at home for delivery.

Tesco offers cheapest SIM-only mobile phone deal

Supermarket chain Tesco has launched a new tariff plan, which is considered to be the cheapest SIM-only deal available so far.

Tesco Mobile is offering unlimited texts and 100 minutes of calls for just £6 a month. After the 100 minutes, users will be charged at a flat rate of 20p a minute for calls to landlines as well as mobile phones on any network.

Access to voicemail will cost 10p a minute, while video calls on the same network will cost at 50p a minute. The deal is available online as well as over the phone.

Tesco has announced its pricing and tariffs for Apple's iPhone 4, which is making its UK debut on 24th of June.

Tesco is offering a 16GB pay-as-you-go iPhone 4 for £479, while the 32GB version is available for £569.

A 16GB iPhone 4 on 12-month contract costs £20 per month, while the handset costs £349. Customers can also grab the 16GB version for £19, if the go for 24-month contract at £45 per month. The 32GB version costs £99 on the same deal.

Orange, Vodafone and O2 have already announced tariffs for the iPhone 4.

UK corporate governance advisory firm Pensions Investment & Research Consultants (Pric) said directors’ bonuses and long-term incentive offered by Tesco were excessive.

Tesco to launch iTunes like Digital Locker service

Supermarket chain Tesco said it would introduce an iTunes like service, dubbed Digital Locker, which will allow its users to access any content they buy online on a number of devices.

Those Tesco customers who own a Clubcard will also have a Digital Locker as it is linked to company’s reward-card database. For example, if a customer purchases a CD or DVD online, the digital copy of the title will automatically get transferred to customer’s Digital Locker.

The customer can stream or download the digital title on as many as 12 registered devices, including phone or laptop.

Last week, the long-serving Chief Executive, Sir Terry Leahy said he would resign next year. It has been reported that Reid, 63, initially had decided to step down but now he has committed to stay.

Once Philip Clarke, the International Director, succeeds Leahy next March, David is tipped to remain for at least several months.

Britain’s leading retailer Tesco is expected to post profits of £3.38 billion on Tuesday when it will unveil its annual trading figures.

The expected figure is double the combined profits of its rivals Asda, Sainsbury and Morrison. Sainsbury reported a rise of 5.8 per cent in sales, while Morrison saw an increase of 7 per cent in sales.

Tesco's Middleton distribution centre is on the verge of closing, as the work will be shifted to Widnes, which will have an effect on almost 620 of its staff members. According to Tesco, the Middleton site was too small to be expanded, if required.

The distribution centre is spread in about 298,820 sq ft on the Stakehill Industrial Estate, which is responsible for handling chilled and cold storage distribution for the North West. The closure will be in the month of July.

UK's biggest supermarket chain Tesco reported strong Christmas sales on Tuesday, beating market forecasts.  

Domestic like-for-like sales excluding petrol and adjusted for VAT jumped 4.9 per cent over the Christmas season. Market analysts had been expecting sales to rise by just 3 per cent for the six weeks to January 9.  

Tesco’s 100 million pounds loyalty vouchers scheme, which was launched before Christmas to attract more shoppers, proved its worth.

British retailer Tesco opened its first mall in Qingdao in China on Saturday, completing first step towards its goal of opening 23 giant shopping centers across the country.

Tesco has plans to invest $801 million in shopping mall business in China this year to take advantage of one of the world’s fastest growing market.

Police had to cordon off the entrance of the new mall to prevent a possible stampede as more than 50,000 shoppers turned up.

Tesco, which is all set to report Christmas season trading figures on Tuesday, is expected to beat city forecast. Tesco launched Clubcard scheme to attract shoppers over Christmas.

Tesco is tipped to post like-for-like sales growth of between 3 per cent and 4 per cent.

Analysts at Shore Capital, who were projecting an increase of 3 per cent in like-for-like sales, now expect better results.

British bargain-hunters rushed the High Street on December 31 to take advantage of lower prices before the return of VAT to its pre-recession level.

Retailer reported by a third on the last year. John Lewis said it saw a year-on-year rise of 31 per cent in the sale of big-ticket items such as televisions and furniture since Monday.

VAT has returned from 15 per cent to 17.5 per cent starting January 1. However, leading retailers such as Tesco and Asda have promised to absorb the increased tax themselves rather than passing it to customers January 31.

Britain’s leading grocer Tesco along with its rival groups such as Asda and J Sainsbury said they would absorb the increasing value added tax themselves rather than passing it to their customers.

VAT is returning from 15 per cent to its pre-recession level of 17.5 per cent from January 1, 2010. Last year, the Government had slashed VAT to support economy in wake of recession.

Tesco has plans to freeze VAT on a number of non-food items to drive sales.
