Acer Shipments Have First Gain in Two Years, Asustek Grabs Share

With the second-quarter shipments of Taipei-based Acer marking the first quarterly gain for the company in two years, the third-ranking computer manufacturer grabbed 11 percent market share during the quarter; and thus recorded a turnaround from its first annual loss in 2011.

According to the statistics shared by data researcher Gartner on Wednesday, Acer outperformed a 0.1 percent computer industry decline during the second quarter, to climb 3.6 percent year-on-year; thereby recording its first increase since the same quarter in 2010.

The Computex 2012 trade conference in Taipei witnessed Acer unveil a bevy of devices running Microsoft's forthcoming Windows 8 operating system, with the impressive new lineup boasting top to bottom touch support as well as an evident focus on flexibility.

The Windows 8-enabled devices introduced by Acer at the conference included a couple of Aspire S7 series of ultrabooks --- a 13-inch model and an 11.6-inch model; both of which have aluminum unibody construction and full HD screens that are capable of folding back 180 degrees so as to allow the system to lie flat.

Taiwanese electronic giant Acer used Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to unveil its two Android-based smartphones, viz. the Liquidmini and BeTouch E210.

The stylish chrome edges of the Liquidmini make it slightly resemble other handsets in the Liquid range. It runs Android OS 2.2, and comes equipped with a 3.2-inch multi-touch screen, a 5-megapixel camera and a 600MHz processor.

Other striking features of the Liquidmini include a built-in FM radio, 512MB of RAM, a pre-installed 2GB MicroSD card, WiFi, Bluetooth and DLNA support.

Equipped with the latest Intel Atom dual-core Atom N550 processor, the Aspire One Happy comes pre-installed with two operating systems viz. the Android and Windows 7.

Striking features of the 1.25kg-netbook include Intel's Graphics Media Accelerator 3150, a multi-in-one card reader, 250GB of storage. The WSVGA high-brightness display of the 24mm thin device features aspect ratio of 16:9.

Liquid Metal Acer smartphone, which remained a hot topic for online rumors over the past few months, has finally been unveiled by Taiwanese manufacturer Acer.

The Android-powered smartphone comes equipped with a 3.6-inch touchscreen, a Qualcomm 7230 800MHz processor and a front-facing 5-megapixel photo snapper that features LED flash, image stabilization and facial recognition.

The handset runs Google's Android 2.2 operating system, and also features Acer's Breeze UI, 802.11n wireless, 3G connectivity and Adobe Flash support.

Computer giant Acer has lengthened its Aspire line by adding Aspire One Happy netbook computer that run the Android smartphone operating system alongside Windows 7.

The 1.25KG-Aspire One Happy runs Android 2.1 operating system, and comes equipped with an LED backlit 10.1-inch screen, 250GB of storage and an Intel Atom N450 or dual-core Intel Atom N550.

Acer is reportedly preparing to launch its new Android-powered smartphones, the Liquid Metal, in the UK in late October.

The sleek-looking Acer Liquid Metal smartphone will run the latest version of Google’s operating system, Android 2.2 or Froyo.

The upcoming handset will feature a 3.6-inch WVGA touchscreen, an 800MHz ARM-based Qualcomm processor, Dolby Mobile support, 512MB of RAM, Bluetooth 3.0 and a custom Acer UI.

The camera has not been detailed, but the leaked pictures show that it will have a built-in camera with a LED Flash.

Acer founder Stan Shih has claimed that Apple offerings are "mutant viruses", aiming to cannibalize the PC market.

The interview with Shih claimed that Apple offerings such as iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, were eating the market share at an increasing rate. He added that PC manufacturers are soon developing the range of updates to cure the 'virus' and segregate it.
