The US communications regulators declined a proposal for building a free, nationwide wireless broadband network using unused airwaves.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced on Wednesday that it turned down the proposal that the winner of an auction for the radio spectrum offer free internet service to all those who connects to it. The proposal had come from a startup known as M2Z Networks.

Chief of the FCC’s wireless bureau, Ruth Milkman, said in a statement that they considered the proposal carefully and thoroughly, but found that it was not the best policy outcome.

Sony shows off prototype of its future 3D-capable laptop

Sony on Wednesday used its press conference at IFA electronics show in Berlin to announce its first expedition into the 3D-capable laptop market.

Sony showed off prototype of a 3D-capable Vaio laptop model that will debut in spring 2011. The prototype was equipped with a "3D" button and active-shutter glasses to detach what the right and left eyes see.

The 3D button will allow users to set it for use in 3D mode. Otherwise, the device acts like a normal laptop with resolution of 1,920 by 1080 pixels.

Sony unveils revamped e-readers, with higher prices

Electronics giant Sony on Wednesday took the wraps off its three revamped models of e-readers.

The new models include Reader Pocket Edition, which come with a 5-inch diagonal display, and a price tag of $179. The 6-inch screen Touch Edition has been made available for $229, while the 7-inch Daily Edition has been priced at $299.

The Pocket Edition is now costlier by $29 from the previous model, while the prices of the Touch and Daily editions have been hiked by $59 and $49, respectively.
