Food distributor 3663 has finally revealed the name of the company that had supplied halal food containing pork DNA to prisons.

The food distributor announced that the very small number of halal savoury beef pastry products that were found to contain traces of pork DNA had been supplied by McColgan's Quality Foods Ltd.

Halal meat can be described as meat slaughtered by hand and blessed by the person doing the slaughter. However, some Muslims have now started accepting mechanized form also. But under Islamic law, the consumption of pork is strictly forbidden.

British chilled food magnate Ranjit Boparan triumphed in a battle to acquire Northern Foods, after the Fox's Biscuits and Goodfella's pizza-maker backed his 73p-a-share bid.

Forty-four-year-old Boparan’s bid values Northern Foods at £341 million. Mr. Boparan’s bid is well ahead of Dublin-based Greencore's November bid of 50p-a-share. Mr. Boparan has been building a stake in the firm since December.

The deal will create one of the UK’s biggest food suppliers, with a workforce of around 17,000 and a turnover of more than £2 billion.
