Blood Pressure Pills Increase Cancer Risk

The Daily Express has warned that blood pressure pills consumed by about a million Britons have been linked to cancer. As per the study, patients who take angiotensin receptor blockers are more prone to be diagnosed with the disease, as compared to those who are not taking them.

Though, it has been suggested that people who are taking ARBs should continue to take them. They can talk to their doctors if they have any concerns. It is difficult to establish balance of benefits and harms for some treatments. ARBs can prevent deaths related to cardiovascular disease.

The researchers while conducting the trials were interested in the effects of ARBs on new cancer occurrence, and on deaths from cancer. These drugs block the effects of a hormone called angiotensin II in the body, which reduces blood pressure.

They found that lung cancer was significantly higher in those taking ARBs.

Dr. Like Sipahi, from The University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland shared that the increased risk found is a modest one as these drugs are widely used.

He said, “My message for the patients who are currently on ARBs is they should not stop taking these medications on their own because they have beneficial effects”.
