An Edmonton restaurant owner in Alberta has been banned from being a part of the food industry for a period of three years. He had violated the industry's food safety regulations many times.
The provincial court gave the prohibition to the 57 year old John Zee Ng, the owner-operator of China BBQ, 9655 102 Ave., as part of a probation order after beseeching guilty to two counts under the Public Health Act.
As per what the court heard, despite a lot of warnings, he repeatedly stored barbecued meat and other foods at improper temperatures and spent more time in concealing the illegal practice from inspectors. This was Ng’s fourth related conviction, who had also been fined $6,900. He along with his wife and son and his Company were fined a record $51,520 in 2008.
The three year ban was the only way to tackle the problem, according to Alberta Health Services prosecutor Rob O'Neill. He said, “If large monetary penalties won't work, it's better to get them completely out of the industry”.
On 14 September, the Environmental Health Officer, Glenn Jenkins went to the downtown eatery and found cooked pig’s feet, poultry wings and rice wraps being stored in a cooler, as per what the court heard. Ng was told to surrender his food permit the following day and the eatery was closed.
