BT to add 1,600 engineers to Openreach workforce
New recruitments by BT are expected to help the telecom firm address complaints that it often leaves its customers stranded without access to internet for too long.
BT has launched a major recruitment drive across the UK to hire as many as 1,600 engineers for Openreach, which is responsible for installing and maintaining fibre optic lines on behalf of most phone companies in the country. Openreach supports nearly 19 million properties that use super-fast fibre lines.
Joe Garner, chief executive officer of Openreach, "One customer being out of service for too long is one too many. Millions of customers depend on broadband and they rely on us to keep them connected, whatever the weather."
Garner added that the new recruits would be a "welcome boost" to Openreach's existing engineering workforce. Promising a better maintenance of Openreach's vast network, he said rewiring of ageing telegraph poles would be done before faults starts occurring.
Openreach's massive network covers almost all 28 million premises of the UK. Garner also promised that the telecom giant would start publishing regular information about its service performance by the summer.
Meanwhile, industry watchdog Ofcom is all set to publish its final decision on tougher new sanctions that will oblige BT to repair faults within 2 working days and install new fibre lines within 12 working days.
