Amazon launches a managed NoSQL database service called DynamoDB

On Wednesday, Amazon Web Services (AWS) debuted a managed NoSQL database service – the DynamoDB database service - which marks a widespread attempt in the direction of building a new type of database for “unstructured” information, so as to enable the users not only to launch a database but also to scale it up or down as per their requirements.

The new DynamoDB database service will be of immense significance to the web companies which are engaged in the collection, storing and processing of an increasing amount of data.

Since traditional databases – like the Oracle database and the open source MySQL - fall short on capability in terms of enabling users to scale quickly, the scalable NoSQL database will essentially help AWS users do away with the cumbersome and time-consuming process of forecasting and readying their databases for optimum performance during heavy usage periods.

According to the information shared by AWS, the DynamoDB database service chiefly stores data on Solid State Drives and then replicates the data across regions so as to ensure the consumers’ accessibility to NoSQL database service.

Noting that the design of the new DynamoDB database service was essentially based on Amazon’s experience of developing huge non-relational databases for Amazon. com, AWS said that Amazon is internally using the DynamoDB database for its Amazon. com advertising platform, Amazon Cloud Drive, IMDb and Kindle.
