Boxee releases final desktop version

Boxee, the inventor of Boxee Boxes that that stream live videos to TV sets, is releasing newest 1.5 update for PCs and Boxee Box devices.

The update is being tested by select Boxee Box owners with plans to roll out a public beta in January, but Windows, Mac and Linux-based PC owners can download the newest build starting today.

The latest version of the software brings various improvements to the interface of the entertainment hub.

The new app brings a newly revamped interface that promises faster access to the browser and to make it easier to access search function. The menu appears as an overlay.

The downloadable version will also feature better file support, a new on-screen display and HTML5 WebKit based browser. In addition, it will support multiple languages.

Announcing the latest update, the company said, “If you are a current Boxee user on a computer we hope that you will enjoy 1.5 and maybe when you are ready to retire that good ol' HTPC/Mac Mini you will decide to get a Boxee Box.”

The company confirmed that the 1.5 update would be the final desktop version of Boxee as it would be pulled in January, when the interface would arrive on Boxee’s own hardware with the Live TV Tuner add-on.
