UK Government considers new law guaranteeing fast broadband all homes

British Government is mulling over plans to place access to fast internet at par with essential service such as gas and water.

Under the new plans, all households will have a legal right to high speed broadband as its supply will be guaranteed by the legislation.

The Government has promised to roll out 2 Mbps broadband service to all households by 2012. In addition, the Government wants to see super-fast broadband service to be available to around 90 per cent of the households across the country.

High speed broadband service is expected to end the digital divide between rural and urban areas. It will also slash traffic as well as CO2 emissions as a number of commuters will start working from home.

Commenting on the issue, cabinet member for health & community Christopher Snowling said, “People living in rural areas deserve the same quality of internet connection as those living in major towns and cities.”

Meanwhile, Edd Dawson, the editor of Broadband. co. uk, has criticized the UK Government for not taking the goal of providing super-fast broadband to all households sincerely.
