With the help of the bank accounts of foreign students, hackers are said to have transferred the money which had been stolen in the cyber-theft scheme.
This theft is said to involve computer viruses through which the hackers happened to steal user names and passwords from unsuspecting victims. This information and detail was further used by them, to drain away all the money present in the bank accounts.
However, more than 80 people are now said to have been charged for the amount that had been stolen from the American bank accounts in Eastern Europe. As much as $3million was reportedly stolen from the bank accounts as a result of this cyber theft scheme.
Around 37 offenders were charged with arraigns like conspiracy to commit bank fraud, money laundering, false identification use and passport fraud etc.
Following a yearlong investigation, 55 more people have been accused with some charges involving theft and conspiracy.
"The Zeus Trojan allegedly allowed the hackers, from thousands of miles away, to get their hands on other people's money - with far less exertion than a safe cracker or bank robber", said Janice K. Fedarcyk, Assistant Director in charge of the FBI's New York office.
