Facebook, Twitter users could face increased insurance premiums

nsurance price comparison site Confused. com has warned that users of the social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter could face hiked home insurance premiums.

The site said that location-sharing features of the social networking sites could jeopardize the security of the homes by providing anti-social elements with information regarding the whereabouts of the owners of the homes.

Those who are in the habit of sharing their travel plans on Facebook or Twitter makes it easy for hi-tech robbers to raid homes in their absence.

According to the chief of home insurance at Confused. com, Gareth Kloet, miscreants are becoming more tech-savvy, and arrange burglaries with military meticulousness.

Speaking on the topic, Mr. Kloet added, "Insurance providers are starting to take this into account when they are assessing claims and we may in future see insurers declining claims if they believe the customer was negligent.”

Warning from Confused. com emerged following a series of robberies in the US state of New Hampshire, where robbers used people’s Facebook status updates to know who were away from home.

Privacy advocates have been condemning location-sharing services such as Facebook Places since their launch, claiming such services could put the security of the individuals as well as their property at risk.
