Flu Vaccination Compulsory for All, Including Health Care Workers

As per the American Academy of Pediatrics' latest statement, it is compulsory for each and every health care worker to get flu shots.

Many other professional organisations like the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the National Patient Safety Foundation, and the Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America also support the proposal made by AAP.

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) figures released in the month of January, 35% of health care workers were given the H1N1 and seasonal flu vaccines. In the current season, there will be only one flu vaccine for both H1N1 and the seasonal flu.

In California, as per the state law, the hospitals cannot force the health care workers to receive influenza vaccination. But at the same time, the voluntary vaccination program is not implemented properly.

However, according to the Senate Bill 739 that was passed in the year 2006, it is mandatory for the California Department of Public Health to publish the health care workers' vaccination status from each hospital.

The medical experts say that although elderly people and infants are most susceptible to flu, that doesn't mean that healthy people are safe and the flu cannot affect them. So, it is essential that everyone gets the flu vaccination.
