A study was conducted in which mice were exposed to tobacco carcinogens and it was found that the formation of tumours decreased by 70%.
Another clinical trial was done by Japanese researchers in which they found that the medicine reduces colorectal tumors in human beings.
The National Cancer Institute is now planning to conduct a clinical trial in order to note the effect of the drug in those people who smoke, and who are suffering from breast and prostate cancer.
Metformin, which was earlier marketed with the name of Glucophage, is being consumed for the last 20 years and around 40 million people in the United States are using this medicine.
Dennis and his team members mentioned that there may be a relationship between insulin and cancer.
Lewis Cantley, who is the Director of the Cancer Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, said that metformin is found to reduce the level of insulin and IGF1 (insulin-like growth factor) in the body.
