Heathrow airport’s expansion case gets boost
United Kingdom

The British government's official climate change watchdog said that expansion of Heathrow airport could go ahead without preventing government from achieving its targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

The watchdog said other sectors of the economy must cut emissions by 90 per cent to make a room for aviation to grow.

However, it added number of passengers must not increase more than 60 per cent by 2050. It may be noted here that estimated have shown that air travel will rise 200 per cent by 2050 in case it is not constrained.

The Government has plans to construct a third runway and sixth terminal at Heathrow airport.

The Government had commissioned a committee to advise it on how to meet its legally binding targets.

The committee's chief executive David Kennedy, said, "It's not that demand has to fall in order for us to meet the target, demand can increase but only in a limited way."

The British Government has promised that it would not allow carbon dioxide emitted from aviation to exceed 2005 levels by 2050.
