After an afresh grant of monetary assistance from the Australian mobile- infrastructure operator, the project of making New York’s subway stations digital by including mobile- phone and Wi-Fi service progressed again.
The project was put off for around three years as Transit Wireless landed into monetary troubles, due to the onset of recession.
Transit Wireless LLC group signed the contract in 2007 and as per the new agreement; Broadcast Australia acquired a majority stake in the former. The contract provided two years to the Company for establishing network of wires for mobile phone signals subterranean stations near 14th Street on Manhattan’s West Side and four years for 271 leftover underground stations.
Chris Jaeger, Managing Director of International Business for Broadcast Australia stated that the deal is a kind of an opportunity that they were always seeking for and the project coincides with their business aims.
The plan costs around $200 million and an additional $46 million fee to the transit authority.
The carriers of the mobile services will be AT&T Inc., Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel Corp.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is facing budget deficit of around $900 million, which it has been compensated by reducing services and cutting jobs. Also, monthly subway and bus fares may increase by at least $10.
